In the course of a study, the concept for the demolition and new construction of a hotel complex in a community in Vorarlberg was developed.
The design shows a rough definition of the building masses and the clever use of the local terraced topography. It moves away from the classic hotel business towards a mixed form of hotel, condominiums with space for commercial areas, as well as a restaurant and a café to generate a new community meeting place for the village.
The key factor of this project was to break up the large existing hotel volume into four smaller buildings that fit into the existing village structure to act as a new community center.
This is achieved through the form, arrangement and orientation of the buildings, as they adapt to the layout of the neighboring street and integrate into the urban grain of the village. In this way, they give the impression as if they have always been there.
The slight slope is cleverly utilized in the design by positioning the parking spaces and the wellness area underneath the hotel into the hillside.
A reinterpretation of the local gable roof forms, through a 45 degree turn, also gives the buildings an identity-forming character.
