The idea of urban integration was decisive for this competition design for an elementary school. It was also important to offer the entire community added value.
The new educational campus picks up on the urban structure of Fürstenbrunn and thus expands the existing village structure. With a clearly defined village square, it forms the new center of the community.
The elementary school, all-day school and gymnasium are designed as independent structures, connected by a single-storey, largely glazed base. The all-day school integrates itself into the urban structure of the existing residential buildings through a skillful rotation.
The gymnasium in turn picks up on the alignment of the kindergarten building and, by lowering the level of the gymnasium, enables a connection to the heights of the existing building. Large areas of glazing give it the appearance of a pavilion with a flying roof, through which you can look out. This creates a visual axis from the schoolyard to the green area of the kindergarten.
The planned timber hybrid construction method allows for a high degree of prefabrication, ensuring a fast construction process and short construction time.
Vertical timber slats divide and structure the façades, serve as a climbing aid for the greenery and provide external sun protection. All roof surfaces are extensively greened and fitted with flat-sloped PV modules in a pyramid arrangement with an east-west orientation.
A groundwater heat pump, powered by solar electricity generated on site, ensures optimum year-round conditioning.
The new multifunctional village square will become a car-free meeting zone and will be closed to through traffic. This allows children to arrive safely and spend time outside without danger.
The spacious assembly hall acts as a continuation of the village square in the interior and as a gallery for the lowered gymnasium. The village square is bordered to the south by seating, water features and shady trees.
The first floor of the school building houses common areas for teachers, school management and administration. On the first floor, a creative area offers additional educational activities and a roof garden that allows views of the auditorium below. The classrooms are located on the 2nd and 3rd floors. An outdoor classroom is also planned in the northern school garden, which enjoys the shade of the school building in summer.
In the interior areas, visible and tangible wooden surfaces provide a calming and appealing learning experience.
In order to generate added value for the community, care was taken in the design to ensure that the building can be used for multiple purposes and that community events can take place alongside school activities. For example, barrier-free access to the gymnasium is possible, which can also be used for goods deliveries. The assembly hall can also be used as a separate event venue. Thanks to its direct connection to the serving kitchen, the new village square can be used for festivities.
The library is located directly on the village square and can also be used outside school hours thanks to a separate entrance.
